Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)

Welding often induces residual stress due to thermal cycles, which can lead to cracks or distortion. PWHT helps in:

  • Stress Relief: Reducing internal stresses that may cause cracking or deformation.
  • Improved Toughness: Enhancing the material’s ability to withstand impact and stress.
  • Minimizing Hydrogen-Induced Cracking: Reducing the risk of hydrogen cracking in the welded area, especially in high-strength steels.
  • Reducing Hardness: Lowering the hardness of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) to prevent brittleness.

Typically, PWHT involves heating the welded part to a specified temperature (usually between 550-700°C, depending on the material and application) and then slowly cooling it to ambient temperature. The process ensures that the welded steel attains the desired mechanical properties for its intended use.

Normalising Steel Plate & Sectional Steel

Normalising is a heat treatment process applied to steel to refine the grain structure and enhance the material’s mechanical properties. In this process:

  • Steel is heated to a temperature above the critical range (usually around 850-950°C), where the steel becomes austenitic (a phase where the structure of steel is homogeneous).
  • The steel is then air-cooled, resulting in a uniform fine-grain structure.

The key benefits of normalising include:

  • Improved Strength and Toughness: By refining the grain structure, normalising improves the overall mechanical strength and toughness of the steel.
  • Enhanced Ductility: Steel becomes more ductile and less likely to fracture under stress.
  • Improved Machinability: Steel that has been normalised is easier to machine due to its uniform grain structure.
  • Uniformity: The normalising process ensures a more consistent microstructure throughout the material, leading to more predictable behavior in applications.

Steel heat treatment is essential for ensuring that steel components and structures perform optimally in demanding environments. These services:

  • Enhance the mechanical properties of steel, making it more suitable for high-strength applications.
  • Help steel components maintain their integrity and longevity, reducing the risk of failure.
  • Are crucial for industries like construction, aerospace, automotive, and oil and gas, where material performance is critical to safety and efficiency.
  • Wenco is highly experienced in supplying these services over several decades with expertise to ensure optimal outcomes are achieved.
